   The perspectives of PSU medical students on the integrated -
PBL curriculum

Introduction: Faculty of Medicine, Prince of Songkla University (PSU) was the first medical
school in Thailand that hybrid-PBL curriculum has been implemented since 1999. In January 2002,
those students were being in late 4th year, which was the first clinical year that was taught by the
new curriculum. This qualitative study was conducted to explore the student’s perspective on this
new integrated-PBL curriculum that may be used for further improvement.
Methodology: 21 Medical students studying in late (38th week of total 40 week) 4th year in
Faculty of Medicine, PSU whom systematically selected from 3 rotation-groups participated in
focus group discussions. Semi-structured question guideline, focused on perspectives on learning
process, content of knowledge and clinical relevancy, was used in discussion, while information
were collected by note taking, tape and video recording. Tape transcribing altogether with note
taking were transformed by Ethnograph version 4 and analyzed with agreement of 3 researchers.
Result and Analysis: Most of students reflected that they appreciated with SDL as life long
learning. Most of preclinical knowledge was relevant to clinical year. On the contrary, students recognized
some non-relevant integrated-PBL curriculum in facilitator’s and knowledge assessments.
Variability of teacher’s attitude and experience were considered as important issues. In
addition, schedule and rotation sequence in clinical year resulted in different opportunity to learn
procedural skills.
Conclusion: Early clinical exposure and PBL process motivated students to enjoy selfdirected
learning. Preclinical knowledge and SDL could be applied in clinical year. Most of students
still concerned about examinations and marks. Teacher preparation and appropriate evaluations
needed to be considered.
