Every child should get rotavirus vaccination

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has issued a recommendation that every child should be vaccinated against the rotavirus.
More than 85 per cent of the 500,000 deaths caused by the disease affect poor children in Africa, Asia and Latin America, according to the WHO.
Rotavirus drops are routinely prescribed to babies in the US and without them virtually all children are infected by the age of three.
The recommendation "clears the way for vaccines that will protect children in the developing world from one of the most deadly diseases they face," said Dr Tachi Yamada, president of global health at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
A recent vaccination trial carried out by GlaxoSmithKline in South Africa and Malawi showed that medication can work even in areas with poor sanitation.
The rotavirus lives in the gut of those infected and is spread through airborne liquid droplets.
It causes diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever and dehydration.
