I believe everyone want to be good people.Everyone wants happiness and wants to be surrounded in peaceful and secured environment.

I believe most of us know the theory.But.....The problem is how to apply it to daily living.

Role model?
Rule/law?

How to set it as our culture?(Concrete answer is required....:))

   Dear Cosmos,

I am glad you have found they are interesting. Indeed the real significant of these stories is not about just the feel-good effects after reading but how and what we will be doing next.

This is not a quick fix or anything like tedious methodology. I reckon it is about you react according to how you feel. Like Master Cheng Yen, she was just 20-something years old when she took ordained with very simple dhamma from her master, i.e. study Buddhism and help mankind and all being. That"s all. However, it is the authenticity of hers towards the simple way of life and how she perceived as her duty in this life, 40 years later Tzu Chi foundation become one of greatest assets of mankind.

I wouldn"t dare to preach or teach anyone but I think I will start from my own way of behaving, thinking, and feeling. Then it seems others might feel or sense something from that.

I would very much appreciate our exchange further as this topic fascinates me very much indeed as well. I will be looking forward to your reply.

Metta,

Sakon

PS: apology for not-so-concrete answer. This is just my imperfection of my own wisdom

   Dear Aj Sakon,

Thanks for a kind reply.

I'm just impressed that there ia actually a heaven on earth.Theay also live not far away, have black hair, brown/black eyes, and yellow skin....Just like us!

So it should not be that hard for our society to become close to or just like what they are.

The problem is how? But do not tell me to wait for another 40 years sir... :).....

   Dear Cosmos,

Well, the 40 years are for something of the same scale like Tzu Chi, but for the change we can of course start right here and right now.

Vision of Tzu Chi is very simple, i.e. The Four Sublime State (metta, karuna, mudita and upekkha) or Love and love-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity, all of which in fact are not monopolized by Tzu Chi but also what everyone of us has learnt in school. The profound thing Tzu Chi has done is that they can make these values integrated with their normal daily life.

The interesting point is after they do that (integrating the Four sublime state), their work, their live become one. They can do good deed just the same way they eat, breathe, walk, talk. They can smile while they are working just the same while they are playing. No pretentious smile according to the guideline or for some world-dy reward. Just smile from the inside.

The answer is still the same, i.e. we must seek for some of our own spirituality. This is not necessarily religious thing but it can be anything. The definition of spirituality is: you feel and belief in some of virtue that is the whole reason why you exist for and make you worthwhile living. Then after you have identified that, you just live with that. Not just memorizing or reciting it but truly live with it. The Cliche is I believe everyone borns pure. The true goodness is all inside and installed inborn. It is just we from time to time walk away from who we really are and capable of doing.

I don"t know if you are a doctor or not but speaking for my students, if only they can find some connection of why they are here and what deed they have already done to others. Without waiting for all the grade and materialistic honours, they will take something back home (or dormitory) everyday, i.e their pride having helping people from suffering. This is an open-secret of all Tzu Chi people. They are merely happy when they help others. The fabric of society has been sewn in a way of compassion and some simeply good things.

I will be happy to hear more from you. Thank you for the conversation.

I am, I do not

Tzu Chi is a good example for applying the knowledge for a great benefite of mankind.

I agree with you to start from ourself for the first step. For me, my aim for now is not emptiness, eventhough I know that is the only path for true ever-happiness.I still have material aim; enjoy happy family, driving mercedes, living luxury life, have more than enough money and be able to give my fortune to those you need helps.

For me meditation is the basic thing to start with.It bases everything in life.So if you ask me, how to make our society to be close to happiness in any way, may answer would be meditation.......I am not so sure if there is any meditation club here in PSU?

I also want good advise from you.

Cheers!

Thanks so much for your technical help. :)

   Dear Cosmo,

I quite agree that meditation is helpful technique for practicing focusing things and developing still mind. However, no good deeds have yet come from meditation alone. There must be some actions.

Many have experienced, may I say, a feel-good sensation after taking refuge to some remote forest temples for a week or more. Just to find out later when they get back and everything just gets to "normal confusing and hectic" state again. So the very good place for start practicing meditation or mindfulness is not in the remote, and not even before bedtime or meditating room but while we are living our normal daily lives.

For the philosophy of Medicine:

If we try believing in this philosophy, maybe all the luxury we want may come just after we live through and on this professional virtue.

The fact is meditation itself has nothing to do with goodness or morality at all. It is what we are doing at work or at the hospital everyday that matters the most. Then we contemplate on what we have done. We contemplate on the meaning of what we have done. What does it mean to ourselves? What does it mean to our family? what does it mean to the patient and family? Our personal richness or else may have something to it but not much? I am not sure.

Present awearness was what I meant.Being conscious of thought, thought then becomes action.Good thought becomes good action.....In fact, meditation(to be able to catch and eliminate bad thought in time) plus moral would be perfect couple.

I absolutely agree with philosophy of Medicine.

Do you do meditation yourself?

   Dear Cosmo,

That would be a combination of meditation and vipassna meditation, right?

Meditation with deep contemplation (vipassna) will be greatly efficient and the fruit of such practice we will yield a wholesome deed.

I use to do some meditation in the past. Recently, I try to be mindful of what I am and what I am doing. If I do meditation, I would rather walk or run than sitting still.

Here and Now is a very interesting point of Eastern philosophy that intrigue the western world who are more wanting to control the future. last year, one of my American friend who spent almost two years in the North of Thailand and recently went back home wrote an email to us. He said he almost had a cultural shock at home!! because nobody seemed to stay in the here and now at all. Everyone talked and thought about the future and desperately tried to catch up with it!!. He did not think anyone of those would understand that the future is actually something we never exactly control. Only here and now that we can do something about it.

In Thailand, who can actually predict anything 3 months in advance in the past years? Think about plan something 5 or 10 years in the future! Dean of Mahidol recently played a clip from youtube showing that the job in 10 years from now, most of them do not exist yet right now. So we are talking about teaching our students to be able to do job that we have yet known what they will look like. How can we prepare for the future properly?

In the past we enjoy the fact of slowness of how things change. Not anymore. The speed of changes right now is astronomical scale comparing to the past. Carbondioxide emission increase each years is out of scale comparing to what happened a few decades ago.

However, contemplating here and now will bring us more ready for the emerging of some unknown future because we are not hyponizing ourselves that we KNOW something will happen but we will be mindful for that thing instead.

Metta,

Sakon

I totally agree with you.Everyone is struggling in a way.Trying to find the way out.

Vipassna meditation is what I am really interested in.May you please explain more of it to me?And may you suggest good sources of this knowledge? This would be really appretiated.

Start from myself would be the best way to introduce a better world.....

Thanks a lot indeed.

   Dear Cosmo,

I am a no-school vipassna practitioner so, unfortunately, not qualified to guide you to the real teacher.

Recently, I do things with less structure, less formality, and less protocol. I think (and believe) the real practice from normal daily life is more than enough. Actually we can do something just start from what we are doing everyday. Because we do not want a certificate or "brand" and it is really our own way of life the other ways or methodology applied well for others may not suite us.

Look at Master Cheng yen, the founder of Tzu Chi. She did not have any formal rules or protocol. What she has been practicing and teaching are always real stuff from every-day activities.

Head, Heart, and Hand, (the three-layer of bRAIN) we are more familiar using head the most. I think this is the handicap of myself in the past. Waldolf school of Rudolf Stiener devided age-of-learning into three parts namely body, feeling, and thinking (7 years for each). His school method reflects this development and then we will find that what we try to do here in Thailand we skip the first two steps and focus mostly on the third. The results of inadequate physical training/doing, emotional training/practicing could be devastating as we are experiencing right now. The thinking or higher brain function that has not been supported well by bodily doing and put heart into the right place from the first place can be easily corrupted.

I think you can however search for many good teachers or resources of vipassna. I personally do not think formal school or guideline is anything for myself right now. Pretty much enjoy what I am doing lately however.

You are welcome and it is really enjoyable for our conversation sir.
