   Phenotypic switching คืออะไร

ตอบ Phenotypic switching (หรือ phenotypic dimorphism) คือการสลับ (switching) ระหว่าง 2 cell-types. ตัวอย่างคือ Candida albicans ซึ่งเมื่อเชื้อนี้ infect host tissue ก็ switch จาก unicellular yeast-like form ซึ่งเป็น form ที่พบบ่อย ไปเป็น invasive, multicellular filamentous form. Switching ระหว่าง 2 cell-types นี้ มีชื่อเรียกว่า dimorphism.
Phenotypic switching ใน C. albicans ยังรวมถึง การ switch จาก white cells ไปเป็น opaque cells ซึ่งจำเป็นสำหรับ sexual mating.

ตัวอย่าง ที่สองของ phenotypic switching คือ melanoma ซึ่ง malignantly transformed pigment cells สลับไปมาระหว่าง phenotypes ของ proliferation และ invasion ซึ่งเป็นการตอบสนองต่อการเปลี่ยนแปลงของ microenvironments ทำให้เกิด
metastatic progression
