Elective Program for Overseas Students

The Faculty of Medicine offers foreign medical students the opportunity for taking elective subjects. Each programme is designed individually according to the needs & objectives of students. Acceptance is dependent on satisfactory references and availability of supervisory staff in a student's chosen field. details of hospital departments can be found in the general Faculty brochure.

Objectives

The general objectives of the programme are to enable overseas students to become more aware of medical problems and solutions in Thailand and the tropics, and to encourage the exchange of medical ideas and knowledge, as well as teaching/learning methods and cultural experiences, between Thai and overseas students. It is hoped that as a result of the programme, closer ties will be formed between the Faculty and overseas medical schools.

Location

The Faculty of Medicine is on the Hat Yai campus of PSU, which is on the outskirts of the town. Hat Yai is about 1,000 kilometers south of Bangkok near the Malaysian border. It is a large commercial town with excellent shopping opportunities, and is connected locally and regionally by road, rail and air. The surrounding area has great natural beauty including mountains, lakes, caves and waterfalls, and rich cultural heritage. The historic town of Songkhla, with its beautiful tropical beach, is less than 30 kilometers away.

Travelling to Hat Yai Campus

The Hat Yai campus of PUS is located at Kohong, Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province, and can be reached by air, rail or road.

Hat Yai International Airport has regular direct flights from Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. From the airport you can arrange a Thai International taxi to theUniversity Hospital, know as Songklanagarind Hospital (about 20 minutes, current fare 180 baht). Alternatively you can take and airport minibus to town and then a "tuk tuk" (small taxi) or motorcycle taxi to the Hospital. There is also a much cheaper public transport bus from the airport, which passes the University, but this takes much longer.

Hat Yai has daily rail and bus connections with Bangkok and Malaysia. Journey time from Bangkok is 12-16 hours. Arriving at the train or bus station, you can get a tuk tuk to the Hospital for about 45-50 baht.

If you have a problem of communication, try to ask for "Rong-pay-ya-barn More Or" (The Hospital name in Thai), or show your drivers the Thai words written below.

On arrival at the Hospital, go to the Information Desk and ask for the Division for Academic Affairs. The internal telephone number is 1540.

If possible, please arrive during working hours (Monday-Friday 08.30-16.30). Outside these all offices, including the Information Desk, are closed, so separate arrangements must be made.
