A participatory action research was conducted to design, deliver, and evaluate a health edu-cation program for teenage pregnant women who attended an antenatal clinic at a regional hospital, southern Thailand. The study was conducted between January-September 1999. Fourteen health care providers actively participated from the initial stages in designing the teenage education program to the final presentations of the results which included the discussions and evaluation of their participation. A health education program was designed focusing on teenage problems and concerns and later delivered to teenage pregnant women. The program consisted of five sessions. There were preparation for pregnancey, nutrition during pregnancy and breast feeding periods, breast feeding, preparation for delivery, and preparation for postpartum.
An evaluative study of the program was subsequently conducted among 75 selected teenage pregnant women who attended all of health education sessions. Self-efficacy was used as a conceptual framework of this evaluative study. The results of this evaluative also will be included in this paper. A pretest-posttest method was used to evaluate changes in perceived self-efficacy of the women due to the educational program attendance. After attending the program, the average self-efficacy score (MEAN = 132.12) was significantly higher than the average score before attending the program (MEAN = 115.85) and there was significant difference (P<.01). The women also had a high level of satisfaction score of the program (MEAN = 2.9288, SD = .4358).
