Key words : Cassia siamea, barakol, antioxidant, cytotoxic, brine shrimp
Barakol was isolated from the fresh young leaves and flowers of Cassia siamea Britt. in
0.016% yield. The chemical structure of the compound was identified by direct comparison of its spectroscopic data with those reported in the literature. The distribution of barakol in another plants
of the genus Cassia was examined in the young leaves of Cassia grandis Linn. f., C. floribunda Cav., C. alata Linn., C. tora Linn., C. fistula Linn. and C. surattensis Burm. f. and the seeds of C. tora
Linn. by means of thin-layer chromatographic technique. No spot with the Rf value corresponding to barakol was observed on the TLC plates. The EC50 of DPPH radical scavenging activity and the lethal effect against brine shrimp was 9.18 mg/ml and 930 mg/ml, respectively. Its antioxidative activity is approximately 1.3 times higher than that of the well known antioxidant, BHT.
