Hospital charge attributable to trauma in Songklanagarind Hospital

We conducted a study to estimate the hospital charge in trauma patient admitted to Songkla-nagarind Hospital during June 1996 to May 1999. Information of patients was prospectively collected to identify the severity of injuries and outcomes of treatment. Data of hospital charge were collected from computer file of Revenue Unit of the hospital.
The study included 2,044 traumatic injured patients with the case-fatality rate 5.6%. The most common cause of injury was traffic accident. The geometric mean of the hospital charge was 9,690
baht (95% CI 9,173-10,235). The hospital charge according to Trauma Injury Severity Score were 9,218 baht (95% CI 8,723-9,741 baht), 34,724 baht (95% CI 27,493-43,856 baht), 16,442 baht (95% CI 7,002-38,607 baht) for score of 0-25, 26-50, and more than 50 respectively.
The cost of trauma care was considered and related to severity and the cause of injury.
