Comparative studies were carried out on blood composition and immune system in black tiger shrimp of both sexes, with various body weight ranges and different stages of molting cycle. The shrimp samples were collected from farms in Amphoe Ranot, Songkhla province, and Amphoe Langu, Satun province. Parts of the samples were also obtained from glass tanks maintained at the Aquatic Animal Health Research Center (AAHRC). The total hemocyte count and phenoloxidase activity of the samples from Ranot and those maintained at the AAHRC did not differ with respect to the various stages of molting cycle. The samples from Ranot showed total hemocyte count and phenoloxidase activity during pre-molting period (D-stage), molting period (C-stage) and post-molting period (A- and B-stages) of 5.761.53, 5.051.52, 4.951.02 x 104 cell/mm3 and 393.53104.31, 368.54ฑ113.38, 374.56ฑ368.54 unit/min/mg protein respectively, whereas the samples from the AAHRC had gave the values 1.560.90, 1.601.48, 1.361.10 x 104 cell/mm3 and 66.7847.36, 89.32ฑ 41.12, 101.8249.03 unit/min/mg protein respectively. The samples collected from Langu showed higher total hemocyte counts during D-stage and became lower during A- and B-stage with 7.592.30 and 5.560.90 x 104 cell/mm3, respectively. Phenoloxidase activity had a peak during C-stage and declined during D-stage with a minimum during A and B-stage with 299.23ฑ91.68, 293.64ฑ74.09 and 280.9765.96 unit/min/mg protein respectively. However, the total hemocyte count and PO activity as well as blood sugar level did not depend on the sex and size. Additionally, the serum protein from samples collected from different sources showed no differences with respect to sex and size. Taking into account different stages of molting cycle, the samples from Ranot possessed higher serum protein (13.421.30 g%) during D-stage which were higher than for other stages having serum protein levels 12.020.70-12.671.42 g%. The samples from Ranot and the AAHRC showed no difference in serum protein level during stages of molting cycle. Measurement of serum pH showed no difference statistically with values 7.310.11 - 7.790.10 for the samples collected from all three sources during various stages of molting cycle. It is noted, however, that female samples collected from Ranot had higher serum pH than the males from the same source.
