Psychiatric consultation at Songklanagarind Hospital

Objective : To evaluate the prevalence, characteristics of patients, psychiatric diagnosis and reason for psychiatric consultation at Songklanagarind hospital.
Materials and methods : The records during the 2-year period 1996-1997 of 263 patients who consulted for psychiatric problems from other departments were reviewed. The demographic data, clinical diagnosis, psychiatric diagnosis, admission ward and reason from consultee were analyzed.
Results : The patients comprised, 138 males and 125 females. The majority age group was 20-39 years and most consulted from the departments of medicine and surgery. The most common reason from consultee was to evaluate or decide on proper management without diagnosis of specific psy-chiatric problems. One hundred and nineteen patients (45.2%) had comorbid organic and mental illness. Delirium, major depression and adjustment disorder were the most common psychiatric diag-noses.
Conclusion : Psychiatric problem, especialy delirium was common misdiagnosis and under-recognize, so the prevalence about psychiatric problem may be too less than reality.
