Prince of Songkla University (PSU) have several activities dealing with various chemicals, especially in the scientific and technological laboratories. This preliminary study aims to examine generation sources, types, quantities, and constituents of laboratory waste producing during acade- mic year of 1997. The study was carried out by using questionnaires which submitted to laboratories of each faculty at PSU, Hat Yai campus. It was found that solid and liquid hazardous wastes were generated from laboratories. The generation rate of liquid hazardous waste (chemical waste) is about 27 m3/academic year. The data on quality and quantity of hazardous waste obtained was used further for laboratory hazardous waste management planning. Basing on the result obtained, a pilot project on laboratory waste separation, storage and collection system was initiated to perform in voluntary laboratories. Hazardous waste storage system was designed in order to meet the treatment purpose.
This report gives preliminary results on the laboratory hazardous waste survey at PSU; in-cluding information on the classification, collection and storage of hazardous waste together with obstacles occurring during implementation.
