The purpose of this research is to study the physical characteristics of pick-up trucks by ana-lyzing the statistical values of various physical variables of pick-up trucks used in Thailand. The outcomes can be used in standardization of road geometric design and the traffic management that involved pick-up trucks.
From the analysis of the technical data of pick-up trucks in 7 makes and 94 models sold in Thailand between year 1979-1982, using equal weighting, it was found that :
1. The average dimensions of all pick-up trucks are 4833 mm length, 1645 mm width, 1565
mm height, 2903 mm axle distance, 1375 mm from wheel distance, 1371 mm rear wheel distance,
5.75 m turning radius, 1234 kg weight, 2145 cc engine capacity, and 84 hp power.
2. The average dimensions of diesel pick-up trucks are 4853 mm length, 1646 mm width, 1583 mm height, 2926 mm axle distance, 1381 mm front wheel distance, 1373 mm rear wheel distance,
5.80 m turning radius, 1313 kg weight, 2448 cc engine capacity, and 84 hp power.
3. The average dimensions of benzene pick-up trucks are 4564 mm length, 1591 mm width, 1542 mm height, 2709 mm axle distance, 1320 mm front wheel distance, 1317 mm rear wheel dis-
tance, 5.37 m turning radius. 1047 kg weight, 1577 cc engine capacity, and 83 hp power.
From the analysis of 11555 pick-up trucks registered in Songkhla province between 1983-1991 years, taken as the representative of Thailand pick-up truck registration, it was found that the ranking of makes popularity is Isuzu (34.78%), Toyota (27.54%), Nissan (20.95%), Mitsubishi (8.34%),
Mazda (8.05%), Ford (0.77%), and Peugeot (0.43%), respectively. The ranking of colour popularity is red (18.62%), white (16.88%), gray (16.35%), blue (14.11%), brown (9.64%), sky blue (8.35%), green (7.08%), yellow (3.96%), black (2.72%), cream (1.34%), and bronze (0.73%), respectively. People preferred diesel engines for 79.17% with bigger than 2300 cc diesel engines accounted for 77.49%. For benzene engines, capacity of less than 1600 cc accounted for 51.64%. On the truck bed, the long bed accounted for 59.40%.
