The reduction of the total settlement of an embankment constructed on a thick layer of soft
clay stabilized by the cement columns has been investigated using the finite element method in this paper. Several factors affect the design of a cement column foundation such as the column area ratio, thickness of stiff crust, column length ratio, strength of cement columns and initial undrained shear strength of the soft clay to be stabilized with cement columns. Finite element program has been used to study the relative influence of these factors on the reduction of the settlements. It was found that
the total settlement is reduced by the columns.
