Compounds of the type [Ru(tpy)(azpy)(L)]n+ (where tpy = 2,2' : 6',2"-terpyridine, azpy = 2-(phenylazo)pyridine, L = Cl- , NO2- , NCS-, py and n = +1 , +2) were prepared according to the modi-fied method. As the results of Infrared spectra of the complexes show that the azpy-azo vibrational frequencies are varied with p-accepting behavior of coligand (L). Comparing spectra of the four compounds, it is observed that N=N (azo) stretching mode in [Ru(tpy)(azpy)(NO2)]+ occurs at 1,356 cm-1 (the highest value), whereas that in [Ru(tpy)(azpy)(Cl)]+ occurs at 1,312 cm-1 (the lowest value). Results from this study corresponded to the ligand field strength of coligand (L) in the spectrochemi-cal series.
