Key words : tomogram, conventional tomography

Tomogram is a radiograph that demonstrates a clear image of a thin tissue layer lying in a plane of interest. Unlike other types of plain radiographs, the cross-sectional images of the true lateral and frontal images of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) can be visualized on the tomograms. This imaging modality is very useful in the diagnosis and treatment planning, especially in implant dentistry, surgical removal of impaction, mandibular posterior osteotomy and pathology of the TMJ and the jaw bones. A newer tomographic machine has been developed and is controlled by a computer system. Using this system, the overall image quality is improved due to the more complex tube movement and the versatility of the system. Tomogram has, however, the disadvantage of a less sharply defined image and the relatively high radiation dose to the patient compared to using an intraoral radiograph. Appropriate selection of the patient for tomogram should therefore be considered.
